Sizing
Start with building width, then adjust for roof pitch and viewing distance. The most common question we get — answered with real examples.
3 min readStart with one inch of cupola base for every foot of building width. Then adjust for roof pitch, viewing distance, and how strong you want the finished roofline to look.

Recommended base: 36" width for an approximately 36-foot building.
Use This Size in QuoteA 36-foot building generally starts with a 36-inch cupola.
Buildings viewed from the road may need a stronger silhouette.
Photos and basic dimensions can guide the recommendation.
Sheds and compact garages.
Garages, workshops, and medium barns.
Large barns, barndominiums, and horse barns.
Grand rooflines and statement projects.
Use this table as a starting point. Roof pitch, viewing distance, and personal preference may shift your choice up or down.
| Building Width | Recommended Cupola | Common Uses |
|---|---|---|
| 10–15 ft | 18" or 24" | Garden sheds, small outbuildings |
| 16–24 ft | 24" or 30" | Garages, workshops, storage sheds |
| 25–35 ft | 30" or 36" | Two-car garages, small barns |
| 36–45 ft | 36" or 42" | Pole barns, horse barns, barndominiums |
| 46–55 ft | 42" or 48" | Large barns, equestrian facilities |
| 56–70 ft | 48" or 60" | Agricultural barns, event barns |
| 80–100+ ft | 60" or 72" | Riding arenas, commercial buildings |
For a 40-foot barn, a 42-inch or 48-inch cupola is recommended. Use the rule of 1 inch of cupola base for every foot of building width. A 42" looks balanced; 48" makes more of a statement.
Yes. A cupola that's too large can look top-heavy and unbalanced. Follow the 1:8 to 1:10 ratio (building width to cupola base) for proper proportions. When in doubt, send us photos for a recommendation.
Yes. Steeper roof pitches (8/12 and above) often benefit from sizing up one increment to maintain visual balance as the cupola sits higher on the roofline.
The 36-inch and 42-inch cupolas are most popular, fitting the 30-45 foot buildings common in residential barns, garages, and barndominiums.
